In this article, we will talk about all of the laws and rules that are listed by the Animal Welfare Board of India – AWBI, the advisory body for the Government of India regarding animal safety.  

The guidelines were revised in February 2015 to add emphasis on our constitution’s one of the major Fundamental Duties, under Article 51(g), to show compassion to all living creatures. The board has issued these to three categories of people – pet owners, caregivers and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) and Apartment Owners’ Associations (AOA) 

Pet owners: 

1. Pet owners can rightfully consider their pets as family members and must continue to provide care and love throughout the pet’s lives. But owners should ensure to not cause inconvenience to others. Also, it states that no amount should push them to abandon their pets, and doing so will lead to lawful actions.  

2. Barking, a natural form of expression in dogs should be tolerated by society. But dog owners must try to keep their dogs calm during night hours.  

3. Pet owners should take adequate actions to keep their pets healthy and clean. Vaccination schedules must be checked and sterilization is advised.  

4. Pet owners must be conscious to clean up if their pet defecates in public spaces. They can get in touch with RWA’s to find solutions for maintaining cleanliness, but cannot be imposed on anybody.  

5. Leashing your pet in public places is not mandatory but doing so will assure passers-by a sense of safety and comfort. This also reduces the risk of accidents with pets.  

6. RWAs or AOAs cannot debar pet dogs from using lift or elevators facilities.  

7. Any human displaying cruelty on animals, and is bitten by the dog, shall be held accountable. Harassment against dogs is a serious crime. 

Recently, caregivers and animal activists are facing various issues while feeding or helping stray dogs in general. They are either being physically harassed or restricted from extending help. Hence, AWBI has also included certain rules that could protect and guide the people. 

Care-givers of Street Dogs: 

1. Caregivers can feed stray and ownerless animals. The board encourages them to participate in sterilization and vaccination of those dogs. Else, they can provide or get assistance from animal welfare organisations for help. 

2. Caregivers are advised to not feed stray dogs which are away from their place of residence, crowded or children-friendly areas. Feeding must be done in cleaner place and should ensure to maintain it that way after feeding is over. 

3. Sharing the sterilization and vaccination status of stray dogs with RWA and AOAs will help generate positivity and acceptability of dogs in the area.  

4. Caregivers cannot control the defecation habits of strays but they can try initiating methods to maintain cleanliness.  

5. Caregivers should not be intimidated or harassed; it is a serious case of violation.

Guidelines for RWA and AOA: 

1. Ban on keeping of pet dogs is illegal. Even with majority of votes in the society, RWAs and AOAs cannot ask the dogs to leave, unless the pet owner is a violator of municipal or other laws. Barking cannot be cited as a reason.  

2. No fine/penalty can be imposed on pet dogs for using lift services. They cannot restrict them too. 

3. Pets can use the gardens and parks. If it is making the residents uncomfortable, separate timings can be incorporated.  

4. RWAs and AOA cannot impose rules and fines for defecation of dogs in the society. But they can work with the pet owners to create pet defecation areas.  

5. No association can force pet owners to leash their dogs in public or ask for penalty for this. Pet owners are already advised by AWBI on this topic.  

6. Intimidating dogs or a pet owner to abandoning a pet could lead to serious legal trouble. Refrain from cruelty towards pets and ownerless animals.  

The punishments for violating the above-mentioned guidelines could be serious from penalties to imprisonment. Under Section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, any person who indulges in animal cruelty can be booked under a case for various reasons. If any individual is found not following the laws and rules against pet animals and stray animals, they could be reported under sections 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code.

The proven fact is that hand sanitizers consist of chemical ingredients that are toxic and poisonous to our pooches when it is in direct contact with them. Since the product consists of 95% alcohol and constitutes ethanol, they are strong enough to damage your dog’s footpads and cause flakiness in the skin. The symptoms to find if your dog has consumed sanitizers could be excessive drooling, collapsing, low blood sugar and pressure, lower body temperature, and faint breathing. Take him immediately to the veterinarian if you suspect sanitizer intake.  

Also, if you touch your dog after using the sanitizer, it is said to not have any negative effects. This is because your hands are dried after its usage. Some dogs might not prefer to be touched if you use the product on your hand due to the foul smell. Therefore, you can wash your hands with normal soap and water.

Yeast infection in dogs is an inflammatory skin condition. It is natural to spot yeast infection in dog’s skin. But when there is an overgrowth of Malassezia pachydermatis, the yeast species, it becomes a problem. This is commonly found in pets that live in a warm and humid environment. They can affect the parts like skin folds, armpits, between paws and ears of your dog.

According to the American Kennel Club, it is said that there are 340 dog breeds across the world. Among these, there are both recognized and unrecognized breeds. They are categorized under parent clubs/groups to identify them better.  

In the early days, some dogs were purely used and bred for certain tasks. It ranged from hunting, herding, guarding, and sometimes, just for companionship. But with the evolution of mankind, dogs have also altered to adapt to newer lifestyles. Hence, the dogs are categorized into 7 groups according to their vital functions, roles, and traits by AKC.

1. Working Group:  

To assist humans with various works and tasks like guarding, rescuing, and pulling sleds, working dogs were trained. They have different levels of strengths and capacity but the dogs here are very powerful and can be relied upon for performing tasks. The breeds of this dog group can be seen in the fields of security, police, military, farm, and at homes. Their high loyalty makes them the perfect choice for many pet parents. 

Examples of Working Dogs: Boxer, Mastiff, Siberian Huskies.  

2. Herding Group: 

Before 1983, the breeds belonging to this dog group were part of the Working Group. The dogs here are capable of controlling the movement of other animals. They gather, herd and protect livestock and humans. The dogs from this group tend to have better intelligence in herding, hence they are widely used for protection and police work. Sometimes, they can be seen gently shield the children of the house. Although they are comfortable in urban places, you can mostly see them running around and moving in farms and open areas.  

Examples of Herding Dogs: German Shepherd Dog, Border, and Bearded Collies, Swedish Vallhund

3. Hound Group: 

Dog breeds belonging to Hound group tend to show strength, speed and stamina to chase their prey. Their long legs and sleek body form help in better and swift movements. They possess sharp vision and nothing can stop them from catching their quarries. Widely used as hunting dogs, the breeds of this group have wide qualities. There are scent hounds, affectionate dogs and guarding dogs in this group. But again, the diversity of the dogs is fascinating.  

Example: Beagles, Greyhound, Dachshund, Bloodhound 

4. Sporting Group: 

Dogs in this group were once trained to be better companions and sidekicks to the hunters. Their purpose was to assist and protect their owners from other animals. There were spaniels, pointers, retrievers, and setters. When new weapons took over, the dogs were seen participating in sports and games like hunting and fishing. The dogs here possess thick and coarse skin coats and hair, hence providing resistance from harsh conditions. They are also easy to be trained and very alert. Breeds of the sporting group are ideal for families and guide dogs. 

Example: Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel

5. Non-Sporting Group: 

Non-sporting dogs are breeds that have traits that are not fit for sports. They are different in sizes, appearances and personalities. They are not very special like the other groups. It is harder to generalise their traits. In today’s world, they can be very interactive and compassionate.  

Example: Lhasa Apso, Chow Chow, Dalmation 

6. Terrier Group: 

It is said that a majority of the breeds in Terrier Group originated from the British Isles and had duties concerning the geographical features. They were involved in hunting smaller animals, guarding farms and garages. Terrier dogs have few variations like short-legged and long-legged. They have high self-confidence and they can locate their target amidst mountains and waters. They can be bred as domestic pets but taming their personalities would require more efforts.  
 

Examples: Bull terrier, Irish Terriers 

Toy Group: 

The dogs in the toy group are bred with one purpose – to serve as companions to humans. They are mostly smaller in size and weigh less. They can be easily carried around and tend to live longer lives than other groups. You can find these dogs roaming inside the yards and apartments, due to their calmer personality and size.

Make brushing an everyday habit:

Experts say that brushing your dog’s coat every day could help in controlling hair shedding. Brushing their fur will help you detangle hair and removes the dead, broken hair. You need to be careful about the choice of brush which completely depends upon the thickness of the dog’s coat. Coarser hair may require stiff brushes while curly hair can be combed with fine bristled brushes.

Bathing can be included in the routine:

Although many pets dislike baths, it is an easier way to remove excess fur and dead skin. Proper bathing will help improve blood circulation in the skin vessels and boost hair growth. You can choose from a variety of dog shampoos to cater to their hair needs. Bathing is a very effective method to not just remove dirt but to reduce shedding. Also, you can brush after your dog dries to clear the loosened hair.

Give your dog a grooming session:

Dogs require proper grooming services just like us to maintain their coat and skin. Apart from brushing and bathing, you can clean your puppy’s ears and paws to avoid bacteria build-up.
